The Person Behind the Practice

Kerri M. Vercellini

I believe meaningful therapy begins with genuine human connection. While my education and professional training provide the clinical foundation for my work, my own personal, imperfectly human experiences have been equally important in shaping the therapist I am today.

My hope is that by sharing a little of my own journey, you'll gain a better understanding of who I am, what has shaped my perspective, and the values I bring into every therapeutic relationship.

A little about me...

As a child, I was deeply sensitive, quiet, and often hesitant to step into the spotlight. Music and performing arts became an unexpected turning point in my life. What began as learning to project my singing voice gradually became finding my emotional voice as well. Standing on stage taught me that vulnerability could become strength, and that some of the greatest growth happens when we gently push beyond what feels safe.

At the same time, I found myself naturally drawn to understanding people. Even from a young age, friends often trusted me with their struggles, and I felt a deep desire to understand why people suffer and, more importantly, how healing happens. During my teenage years, witnessing the profound impact of trauma and later supporting a family member through serious mental illness reinforced my commitment to pursuing counseling. Those experiences strengthened my belief that behind every diagnosis, behavior, or life challenge is a person deserving of compassion, understanding, hope, and the opportunity to heal.

As I pursued my education in psychology and mental health counseling, another path quietly unfolded alongside it. Through mentors, personal exploration, and holistic training, I discovered practices that encouraged mindfulness, self-awareness, and the connection between mind, body, and emotions. As I continued to grow personally and professionally, I realized these holistic approaches helped me access aspects of healing that I personally felt were often left unexplored through traditional talk therapy alone. Rather than replacing the strong clinical foundation I had built, they expanded my ability to support clients in a way that felt more comprehensive, individualized, and aligned with my philosophy of care.

Living with ADHD has also shaped my perspective in meaningful ways. Like many people with ADHD, I experienced moments of self-doubt and questioned whether I could truly reach my potential. What changed my life was not simply receiving a diagnosis—it was having people who recognized my strengths, believed in my abilities, and helped me develop the tools, strategies, and confidence I needed to thrive. Those experiences taught me that a diagnosis does not inherently limit or define a person's potential. As a result, I bring both professional knowledge and lived experience to the children, adolescents, and adults I work with.

Looking back, one theme connects every chapter of my life: I was fortunate to have people who genuinely saw me, believed in me, and encouraged me to become more fully myself. Family, teachers, mentors, colleagues, and friends each helped me discover strengths I hadn't fully recognized on my own. Their belief in me became a reminder that healing and growth often begin when someone sees your potential before you fully see it yourself.

Perhaps the most significant step in my own journey came when I realized I no longer wanted to separate the different parts of who I was. I could continue being a therapist who privately valued holistic perspectives, or I could choose to practice in a way that authentically reflected both my clinical training and my personal values. Choosing that path required trust, vulnerability, and integrity.

As I embraced a more integrated approach, I found myself practicing with greater authenticity and confidence. It meant allowing my professional knowledge and holistic philosophy to exist together—not because one replaced the other, but because together they reflected who I truly am and allowed me to support clients in a way that felt authentic, ethical, and fully aligned with my values.

I have spent my own life learning to trust my voice, integrate different parts of myself, and live authentically. That same commitment to authenticity, integrity, and seeing the strengths in others is what I bring into every session.

My hope is that when you walk through my door—or meet with me virtually—you'll experience the same kind of support that made such a meaningful difference in my own life: someone who genuinely sees you, believes in your potential, and helps you discover the strengths and wisdom that have been within you all along.
